Ämmässuo fine crushed stone meadow

Wild Zone came up with an idea to experiment using fine crushed stone to repel lupins and as a seedbed for meadows at the same time. In cooperation with HSY (Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority) and NCC, we selected the site for the experiment to be at Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre at a spot almost completely taken over by lupins.

Crushed stone was spread on top of the lupin populations at varying amounts; 10cm, 20cm, and 30cm thick layers. Members of Wild Zone sowed native seeds on the crushed stone. The experiment also utilized stumps brought to the centre to be disposed of, instead turning them into a deadwood installation. A 20cm thick layer of crushed stone was enough to smother the lupins, however a strong-rooted individual could burst through all these layers and therefore a follow-up visit should always be done the following year. Crushed stone also turned out to be a good seedbed for native plants of sun-exposed dry meadows.
