Enrichment meadow
The Hiedanranta enrichment meadow is located in Tampere, Lielahti, in the future residential area of Hiedanranta. The enrichment meadow was bordered with recycled pavement stones from the main street of Tampere, Hämeenkatu. The seedbed of the meadow consists of gravel. The meadow was established in 2020.
Wild Zone sowed seeds of about 30 local plant species on the enrichment meadow. The members of the nonprofit gathered the seeds from within a 1.3km radius of the meadow, from about 50 sites. The members have continued to manage the meadow by weeding, sowing, and planting.
The aim of the enrichment meadow is to accumulate seeds of the rare plants of the area. 'Enrichment' here refers to the meadow's purpose of providing multiple the number of seeds that were needed to establish the meadow. In 2023, the seed production of the critically endangered liqourice milkvetch (Astragalus glycyphyllos) clearly exceeded that of the wild populations in Hiedanranta area. In the future, seeds from the meadow will be used to establish more meadows in the residential area of Hiedanranta.
Novel nature survey
Establishing the enrichment meadow was a part of a novel nature survey conducted by Wild Zone. In the survey, we mapped the most notable local plants and the potential of using their seeds when founding meadows. This way, nature is not only protected and spared; nature is arranged to fit in new land use by changing the form of the current vegetation. Utilizing local flora while developing a new area lends to the creation of unique and characteristic greenspaces.
The Hiedanranta enrichment meadow and the novel nature survey were a part of KIEPPI project (2019–2021) and coordinated by the City of Tampere. Going forward, Wild Zone is managing the meadow with Hiedanrannan Kehitys Oy.
