Transplanting Epipactis helleborine from the tramway in Tampere

Lehtoneidonvaippojen siirto raitiotiereitiltä, Tampere

Wild Zone moved Epipactis helleborine plants to safety out of the way of the tramway construction in Tampere. The plants were dug up in late winter of 2017 and planted later in the spring in Multisilta, Tampere.

Altogether, 23 plants were moved. Of those, 14 grew a little bit of stem and recognizable leaves. None of the transplanted individuals flowered properly during the summer. We monitored the plants in June and July every week. Some of the sprouts vanished from the area for no apparent reason. The following years, some Epipactis helleborine have been sighted in the area occasionally. We carried out the transplantings in cooperation with the City of Tampere, Raitiotieallianssi, and Tampereen Sarka Oy.
