Oulu University seaside meadow

Wild Zone is taking part in establishing a seaside meadow on the Kontinkangas campus. The meadow was started up in 2021. We are experimenting with growing native vegetation typical for seasides on a completely fresh area. Some of the plants sown there require the effect of seaweeds or salt in their seedbed, so we collected seaweed washed up on the seashore and spread it on the meadow.

We chose suitable species for the seaside meadow and collected the seeds, all local origin. We sowed, for example: Lathyrus japonicus ssp. maritimus, Sonchus arvensis var. maritimus, Plantago maritima, Honckenya peploides, Rumex crispus subsp. littoreus, Silene uniflora, Juncus gerardi, Leymus arenarius, and Silene dioica. In addition, we planted some Dianthus superbus and Silene tatarica on the meadow; they are rare riverside plants, but they also grow on the shores of the Bothnian Bay. Growing these rarer plants can help sustain nature's biodiversity.

The seaside meadow is a cooperation with Suomen Yliopistokiinteistöt Oy. Read more (in Finnish) about establishing the meadow from their press release (9/11/2021):
