A Highway 12 junction in Ristola, Säkylä was renovated to increase safety. Renovations brought more green zones between the roads, and sun-exposed dry meadow habitat experiment was set up there. We sowed there, among others, field wormwood (Artemisia campestris), birdsfoot deervetch (Lotus corniculatus), kidneyvetch (Anthyllis vulneraria ssp. Lapponica), great mullein (Verbascum thapsus), clammy campion (Viscaria vulgaris), sand pink (Dianthus arenarius subsp. borussicus), and creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) seeds. We bought the sand pink seeds from a commercial source who had the origin data of the natural population. We are also trying out propagating Cladonia lichens on the area. Lichens may bind the sand in place and hinder other, shade-increasing vegetation from spreading into the sun-exposed dry meadow habitat. We are developing the Ristola sun-exposed dry meadow in cooperation with the Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre).
