Wild Zone began to landscape a hectare-sized slope in Sorila quarry in Tampere in 2017. The seedbed contains recycled concrete, bringing calcium to the area. Therefore we chose to include many plants that favour or tolerate calcium in the soil.
Some plants we sowed are clammy campion (Viscaria vulgaris), kidneyvetch (Anthyllis vulneraria), blueweed (Echium vulgare), oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare), and bladder campion (Silene vulgaris). In addition, we are using the site to experiment with growing the critically endangered liquorice milkvetch (Astragalus glycyphyllos) – for which we have permission from environmental authorities – from seedlings we've grown. During the years of landscaping, mosses have spread in the slope. The fact that they cover some of the ground makes the maintenance of the area easier as they hinder other plants of the surrounding area taking root in the soil.
Wild Zone is continuing to develop the area by planting and sowing more plants. The landscaping is done in cooperation with Rudus Oy.
We sowed the area with seeds of Verbascum thapsus, Berteroa incana, Centaurea jacea, Cota tinctoria, Echium vulgare, Hypericum perforatum, Lathyrus sylvestris, Campanula glomerata, and some Cynoglossum officinale. There were plenty of seedlings as a result of sowings in the previous years.
We sowed the area with seeds of Verbascum nigrum, Verbascum thapsus, Trifolium aureum, Hylotelephium telephium, Silene dioica, Leucanthemum vulgare, Centaurea jacea, Centaurea scabiosa, Viscaria vulgaris, Cota tinctoria, Anthyllis vulneraria, Echium vulgare, Silene vulgaris, Lathyrus sylvestris, Campanula glomerata, Achillea millefolium, and Tragopogon pratensis. Among others, Echium vulgare, Verbascum thapsus, Leucanthemum vulgare, Cota tinctoria, and Anthyllis vulneraria had produced plenty of rosettes.
