Tampere University esker roof meadow

Wild Zone established a meadow and a living roof on the city centre campus of Tampere University in 2019. When choosing the plant species, we favoured especially those that have inhabited near the railways of Tampere since the University is located near the railway. We sowed, for example, Echium vulgare, Cota tinctoria, Centaurea scabiosa, and Cynoglossum officinale seeds on the meadow.

In addition to the meadow, we implemented a living roof on the roof of the underpass from the campus to the other side of Kalevantie. There, we sowed sun-exposed dry meadow habitat plant species, such as Silene nutans, Hylotelephium telephium, Viscaria vulgaris, and Astragalus alpinus. The plants sown are of local origin, and their wild population origins are traceable. Tampere University is located on a completely developed Kalevanharju (lit. 'Kaleva Esker') esker. The living roof offers a habitat for regressing, demanding esker species.

Our nonprofit has managed the meadow and the roof by weeding and sowing more seeds. The meadow and the living roof were implemented in cooperation with Suomen Yliopistokiinteistöt Oy and Tampere University.
