Vaasantie roadside meadow, Ylöjärvi

The sun-exposed dry meadow corridor by Vaasantie is located on state roadside by Highway 3 (Vaasantie), in the esker area of Pinsiönkangas, Ylöjärvi. The corridor is a sunny slope with numerous species picky with their environment. In the 1990s, the area was an experimental landscaping site of the government, and plant species of sun-exposed meadows were planted there.

Wild Zone has taken care of the Vaasantie corridor since 2014 by repelling large-leaved lupin, clearing out trees, and removing moss both mechanically and by adding calcium. The members of the nonprofit have sown some new sun-exposed meadow seeds. They collected the seeds from nearby, and documented the original locations.

The vegetation of the area is a combination of three different means of spreading: naturally, sown and planted by the government in the 1990s, and sown by Wild Zone in the 2010s. A great number of insects have found their way there, including some endangered ones. For example, hundreds of the endangered thyme plume (Merrifieldia leucodactyla) have been sighted in flight there.

Previously, Wild Zone received funding for the management of the area from the City of Ylöjärvi. Since 2023, we have managed the area with Helmi funds from environmental authorities.

Calcium test area follow-up in 2016

Creeping thyme, Thymus serpyllum, had livened up noticeably more on the calcium test areas compared to other areas. Creeping thyme had also returned outside the test areas since trees were removed from the area in 2014. The images feature the status of three test areas in 2015 (on the left) and 2016 (on the right).

Eradicating moss by adding calcium and large-leaved lupin by burning in 2015. In addition, we sowed plenty of seeds of meadow and esker plants.
Following up on the development of vegetation in June 2015. The seedbank has been activated as a result of clearings in autumn 2014.
