In June 2018, we transferred about 50 lesser butterfly-orchids (Platanthera bifolia) in Lahdesjärvi, Tampere, to safety out of the way of construction. We transferred the orchids in cooperation with the City of Tampere, to another location within Lahdesjärvi. The new location already had a small population, so it was thought to be a suitable target site.
We began to prepare the transfers of the lesser butterfly-orchids in 2014. After the city plan for the construction site came into law in 2018, we received an exceptional permit from environmental authorities to transfer the protected plants. Before that, in 2016–2017, we surveyed over 100 individuals within the area, but due to a dry and hot early summer in 2018, their numbers had dwindled.
