Wild Zone began establishing a school meadow for Ylöjärvi upper secondary school in 2020. We experimented on establishing the meadow in a new way, without seedbed change which is expensive and puts strain on the environment. We smothered the existing lawn with thick covers during the course of several months. After that, the dead lawn was mixed into the new seedbed. In addition, a thin layer of sand was spread on the area. The students sowed and planted native plants typical for sun-exposed dry areas, such as relatively open ridge forests or railroad tracks. The students and teachers of the upper secondary school will manage the area going forward.
We received environmental education funding from the local environmental authority to establish a school meadow for Ylöjärvi upper secondary school and compile a school meadow guide. Click the image below to see the guide!
